Sciatica: Main Causes, Characteristics, and Prevention

Has your back been hurting more recently? More often than not, back problems stem from stress on different parts of the spinal cord. One such problem is sciatica, a problem that affects the sciatic nerve, which hits from the lower back down to the back of the leg.

Characteristics of Sciatica

Sciatica is most known for the uncomfortable pain from your lower back to the upper thigh, where the sciatic nerves run down. The pain usually only appears on one side of the body. Many lower back problems could be a sign of sciatica.

Possible Causes of Sciatica

Herniated Disc

Herniated Discs are the most common cause of sciatica. Your spinal cord is made up of a series of bones connected together by discs. They act as cushions between the vertebrae of your spine.

When you age, these discs can grow weaker, making you more vulnerable to injuries. Approximately one in 50 people will experience the effects of a herniated disc. A herniated disk is when this cushion starts to bulge out. When it pushes through the outer lining, it can press against the roots of the sciatic nerve. Luckily, herniated discs usually heal on their own if the body is well taken care of.

Spinal Stenosis

As you grow older, your bones will start to degenerate. Spinal Stenosis is when the spinal cord narrows down the spaces within your spine. This can put pressure on the nerves outside, including the sciatic nerve. People over 60 are more likely to experience this.

Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis Syndrome is an uncontrollable spasm of the Piriformis found deep inside the buttocks. This muscle connects the lower spine to the upper thigh bone, which runs over the sciatic nerve. These sudden spasms can trigger sciatica.

How to Prevent Sciatica

Maintain Good Posture

Having good posture is one way to prevent all sorts of back pain, including sciatica. Slouching can put stress on your spinal cord, so make sure you follow the ideal posture when you’re sitting down, standing up, and walking. If this is something you struggle with, there are plenty of posture correctors available for purchase from online shops.

Exercise can be healthy for the bones when you exercise regularly. It slows down the weakening of your bones. Aging is inevitable, but exercise can extend your lifespan and keep you happy and motivated.

Never Sit for Long Periods of Time

Most people have desk jobs that require them to sit for hours. But even if sitting down doesn’t take much work, it still can put a strain on your body. Take the time to stretch a few times a day.

Living with chronic pain can be difficult. It can be frustrating to go about your day with pain. Knowing the causes and symptoms of common diseases like sciatica can help you determine whether or not you have it. However, it is recommended to see a doctor to confirm your suspicions. If you don’t have sciatica, knowing how to prevent it can save you a lifetime of pain.
